Two weeks later…

Time passes, but memories remain.

Two weeks ago, our family was in Rovies, Evia, when the catastrophic fire in Evia started. I sit, reflecting on what could have been, and what came to be. There are always the “whys” and “because” following events of disastrous proportion. Let it suffice to say that many people in Evia and elsewhere performed philanthropic and ecological deeds that took extraordinary courage and effort. On the other hand, the mechanisms of mass media frequently portrayed the inferno with “climate change” and “evacuation,” without commenting on the “why” and absence of adequate resources.

Certain government figures have stated that Greece is headed towards a carbon-free environment. I invite my readers to visit Rafina during the summer, when the ships release sulfur dioxide into the air at random, even though the European Union and the International Maritime Organization have passed regulations proscribing that form of pollution. Carbon-free?

Who will, how will the ecological balance be restored? Untold casualties of biological agriculture, beekeeping, oxygen generated by pristine deciduous and coniferous forests… Most importantly, how do displaced people restart their lives? The mental and physical casualties will predominate for years…

I sit, reflect on frames of life
pausing, as if each an 8 mm vignette

Standing with friends, supporting
We continue in journey of seen (and unforeseen) destinations

More paying fare to Charon
shortened years of earthly existence;
How many similar stories,
where trajectories end abruptly?

Incline of hope
slope of one plus
Where field of vision is on par with negative
Science, fervently working on reversing pattern
Brethren, there is light
at a speed not fast enough

We await as Stoics
We expect as Optimists

Blessings to all

Thoughts..

Molten thoughts,

seared by recent events;

Thinking of what was,

what is

Fate, initiative,

determining outcome;

Time inconsequential,

has “now” evaporated?

August 11, 2021

Our stay in Greece has been colored in many ways.   We are happy to be safe and at home, as I write; I do not know if this were to be the case had we not made some timely decisions last week.

We made the call to escape inferno’s  path last Tuesday.   We were vacationing on the island of Evia, in Rovies, a quaint village located in the north west corner of the island, with beaches fed by thermal springs.  Earlier in the day (before the fire started), we toured a mountainous area with beautiful forest and waterfalls. That area burned less than 12 hours later.  One day later, over 160 homes in the Rovies village had been destroyed by the fire.

Our escape was predicated on the knowledge that we could reach a town that had ferry service to the mainland (Aidipsos).

While the Evia fire was one of the worst in Greece, other concurrent fires were raging all over the country. One was in the western area of Athens, that took many days to control. Houses and forests burned. A neighbor’s friend lost several homes in that fire.  Smoke from Athens and Evia reached our town of Rafina.

The presence of Antoni and Yianni have made life special these past few weeks. While we have not really vacationed,  we will treasure the moments we spent with the children.

19.00 The long-awaited rain seems imminent; sky overcast, with Zeus conducting Orchestra of Lightning…
