ENLIGHTENMENT My Voyage
The flow chart and Power Point document containing the chart have, by now, become permanent fixtures in our mechanical existence. Time has been quantified to texting, risk assessments, electability, and performance evaluations. Life is measured in dates of birth and death (and if anything happened in between, hopefully there are digital records on the social blogs).
Our increasing inability to stop the second hand is all too evident on the weekends, beginning with the “thank God it’s Friday” salutation, the manic drivers, clogging the roads on Saturdays to catch up with their children and other consumers, and ending Sunday nights. Life -- the function of mitigated stress (or death as a function of ongoing stress).
Are we too busy chasing careers, intertwined with facades, and not happiness?What brought us to this point? Is it our success in ratcheting up income levels (where disposable income becomes subservient to conspicuous consumption)? Is it the subconscious desire to keep up with our consuming neighbors, as the banking system enables borrowing to one’s heart content?
My voyage has been a fascinating tour of the human experience, albeit on a limited scale. The attempt to look back and record, for my family’s and friends’ posterity, speaks to the wonders of Life, as well as the challenges that remain.
